| My Double
Basshas been strung up for about 10 months now, and it is
definitely a keeper. I strung it up without a finish to see if I
had what I wanted. The second one will be completed hopefully this
winter.
I will then take the first one apart
and put a finish on it. I say "take apart" as both of these basses have
bolt
on necks that can be raised or lowered for action adjustments, as well
as removed completely. The basic idea was developed by Jim Hamm,
a Vancouver luthier who included a height adjustment into his necks in
lieu of an adjustable bridge. I've been using bolt-on necks on my guitars
for decades, and it seemed like a great idea for a bass.
During the building of my first bass,
I quickly became involved in double bass repair and it has become a major
part of my work. I routinely do setups, fingerboard leveling, and
new bridges. I also do major structural repairs, scroll and
neck grafts, and extensions. Most repairs can be done in days, rather
than months like many shops. I'm a bass player and I'm interested
in getting you back to your gig with a well setup bass in a reasonable
amount of time.
I love building and repairing basses
more than anything I've done in my 30 year career as a luthier. I plan
to continue to build 1 or 2 per year, as well as offer all bassists
the highest quality, and fastest turn-around, repair facility that I can.
